Plaine Commune
An Urban Metabolism Approach
Plaine Commune is a Public Territorial Establishment (EPT) that groups together nine municipalities north of Paris: Aubervilliers, Epinay-sur-Seine, L’Île-Saint-Denis, La Courneuve, Pierrefitte-sur-Seine, Saint-Denis, Saint-Ouen-sur-Seine, Stains, and Villetaneuse. They are united around projects such as the Olympic and Paralympic Village, seven stations on the Grand Paris Express line, and numerous urban renewal programs.
Plaine Commune is undergoing massive urban redevelopment for which it is underpinned by a sustainable land-use planning model that embraces the circular economy in its building and public works programming. By taking an urban metabolism approach, Plaine Commune aims to harness material and human resources by experimenting with the reuse and recycling of materials, supporting the deployment of local recovery channels for used materials, establishing sorting, storage, and recovery platforms for construction waste, and helping local actors develop their skills.
To scale up its approach, Plaine Commune is also developing a digital tool to help promote the circular economy across the construction industry.
