24th APERAU International Urban Planning Conference

Paris, 08.06.2023

Format 1

“Adaptation: a New Challenge for Urbanism, Narratives to Promote Resilient Regions.”

Franck Boutté gave the opening speech at the 24th International Urban Planning Conference organized by APERAU (Association for the Promotion of Education and Research in Urban Planning and Development).

Pandemics, climate crisis, heatwaves, energy crisis, migrations... crises in all their forms are backing us into a hyperrealist approach to ecological issues, a brutal baptism of fire that compels us individually and collectively to act, through a combination of mitigation and adaptation strategies.

How should we continue to envision our cities and regions? How can we design while balancing sobriety and habitability, with and for every dimension of the living world? What can be done to foster the new collaborations we need between scientists, researchers, designers, prospectivists, and public authorities? Through forward-looking and engaging narratives, Franck Boutté led the audience along a journey towards possible and desirable futures for architecture, urban planning, and development.

The RIU, an event organized by the (Institute of Geography and Sustainability (Institut de Géographie et de Durabilité, IGD), the Faculty of Geosciences and Environment (Faculté des Géosciences et de l’Environnement, FGSE) and the University Observatory for the City and Sustainable Development (Observatoire Universitaire de la Ville et du Développement Durable, OUVDD) of the University of Lausanne, on the theme of “Urbanism for the Living.” These meetings bring together a variety of actors (researchers, doctoral students, practitioners, etc.) to discuss, exchange ideas, and learn about contemporary urban planning topics.
