Our Studio
Since taking on its very first projects, in 2004, the studio has gradually grown from being just Franck Boutté to a team of 35 composed of hybrid profiles, including engineers, architects, and urban planners, split between Paris, Bordeaux, Nantes, and Rennes. The studio embraces a broad spectrum of disciplines and skills—including but not limited to bioclimatic architecture and passive strategies, comfort, environments, health and well-being, resource optimization, energy, water, envelope design, natural ventilation, modeling and simulation, renewable energies, carbon approach and LCA, and environmental certifications (French and other)—and gets involved at every level, every scale, from the smallest material to the region at large.

Now a leader and standard bearer in the fields of environmental design and engineering and sustainable development, our studio also provides consulting services (project management, public policy guidance, network facilitation).
Thanks to its holistic philosophy, involving a mix of intellectual tools, a wide range of digital applications (3D and digital modeling, BIM, advanced simulations in energy and climate, comfort, light, and ventilation), and experimental practices (method development), the team is equipped to respond to all kinds of environmental challenge, from the building to the urban organization level, granting an important place to research.

Franck Boutté, founder and chairman of Atelier Franck Boutté—an engineering studio geared towards the sustainable city—earned his civil engineering qualification from the Ponts et Chaussées engineering school (1988–1992) before spending four years training at the UNO studio of the Paris-Belleville national architecture school, which he left before graduating to start his professional career.
It was this background that inspired him to fuse these two worlds, which he considers complementary and inseparable, and tackle the transdisciplinary exploration of environmental and sustainability challenges.
Composed of often hybrid profiles (engineers, architects, urban planners, researchers), the studio intervenes on all environmental subjects, at the building, urban, and regional level, granting an important place to research and development as well as innovation.
In 2022, Franck Boutté received the Grand Prix de l’Urbanisme, an urban planning prize awarded by France’s Ministry of Ecology, Energy, Sustainable Development, and Planning and the Ministry of Energy Transition for his pioneering approach to the environmental engineering of architectural, urban, and regional projects.
