Reversible buildings, Canal Architecture

Construire reversible 13

“Why are we waiting to build reversible buildings?”

To answer this question, Canal Architecture, an architecture and design studio, is envisioning reversible construction with Construire réversible, a publication presented as a manifesto, a guide, and deep-dive into the heart of the subject of reversibility. Packed with architectural, urban planning, but also philosophical, sociological and economic references, Construire reversible above all expresses Canal Architecture’s commitment to “developing new constructions which in the short or long term can change programs, at a lower cost, according to the needs of the city.” What a neat definition of reversibility. And the needs of the city are also the needs of its residents, whose ways of “living” have evolved and continue to change over time, over a lifetime, just as History does. Housing, working, studying, going out, loving, growing old... peppered with words from city stakeholders, the book Construire reversible promotes reversibility, not as a step backwards but as a “recreative anticipation of architecture.”
