When it comes to heat, we are not all equal.

During a heatwave, we may all see the same temperatures on our thermometers. But we do not all experience heat in the same way.

Depending on the home we live in, the presence of trees on our street, our age, our health or our occupation, a heatwave may be uncomfortable for some and pose a serious risk to others.

Heat is a physical phenomenon. Its consequences, however, are profoundly social and territorial.

The European EUROASIS project – EUROpean Adaptive, Systemic and Inclusive Solutions for Heat Resilience – will focus on strengthening the resilience of cities and regions to extreme heat. It aims to address one of the major challenges of climate adaptation: making access to cooling a common good, available to everyone regardless of where they live, their age or their circumstances.

Alongside 28 European partners*, four pilot cities – Amsterdam, Athens, Zaragoza and Reggio Emilia – will test practical solutions to transform the most exposed neighbourhoods and areas into genuine urban cooling oases: nature-based solutions, climate-responsive urban design, smart warning systems and financing models designed to sustain action beyond the project itself.

Because adapting our cities to climate change is not simply about lowering temperatures by a few degrees. It is about preserving their habitability, protecting the most vulnerable and enabling everyone to continue living, working and caring for others as heatwaves become more frequent and more intense.

At Atelier Franck Boutté, this work will be led by Matteo Migliari, our expert in biometeorology and urban microclimatology, who holds a PhD in Science, Engineering and Environment from ENPC.

Many thanks to the entire consortium for their trust, and to Dragan Milosevic and the team at Wageningen University & Research for leading the project!
